Colours are like memories of other colours

This is the first in a series of works for instrumental ensemble in which an audio recording is played back in part, then 'frozen' abruptly, creating a static drone which serves as a point-of-departure for the ensemble. The recordings used are all extracts of works from classical repertoire, chosen for the sentimental significance they hold for me; in this case, I chose Schubert's D545, Der Jüngling und der Tod. The significance that this particular lied holds for me is unimportant; what I was attempting to llustrate was the way in which sounds have the potential to trigger memories of other sounds, and by extension, fragments of one piece of music may evoke another, seemingly unconnected piece.
